Ok, so you get the Cinnamon Bun part…but what the heck is matcha, you ask? Never Fear! I shall explain all in this post…about my Matcha Cinnamon Bun Smoothie Recipe…and why matcha is the most important thing you’ll learn about nutrition today! :D

So What the Heck is Matcha?

The word Matcha refers to Matcha Green Tea — a traditional form of Japanese Green Tea that is making its way over to the US after being super popular in Japan for oh…just over a thousand years. Yeah, no bigs…it’s true, we’re always the last to know! :D

You usually see green tea in regular old teabags that you can get in the grocery store, right? And you may have even heard of the word matcha because of the heavy use lately from Starbucks. They’re peddling matcha green tea in a few different drinks now, and for a very good reason because of its superior nutritional benefits. I’ll explain!

We all know the health benefits of green tea, right? You always hear about the studies to back these claims up:

Matcha is said to be great for:

  • Weight Loss
  • Calorie-Burning
  • Detoxification of the Body
  • Alkalinizing Agent
  • Cholesterol
  • Blood Pressure
  • Blood Sugar Levels
  • Inflammation
  • Low Caffeine, but Great Energy
  • High Level of Catechins: Protection Against Degenerative Diseases

And about a bazillion other great things. I mean, green tea is the real deal, and it’s no joke. There are about a gazillion studies out there that give so much amazing information about this just-now-becoming-well-known miracle food.

But matcha powder is a super special form of green tea in that, instead of it being in a regular teabag, where you just steep some of the nutrition out…matcha is actually the entire green tea leaf, steamed, dried and then completely pulverized into a form that is super smooth, easy to mix in water and drink straight.

So Much Nutrition in One Cup

The best benefit of all this is that you actually get to drink every bit of nutrition from the leaves, along with the fiber! It’s a nutritional powerhouse and is just becoming known for its superior nutrition.

And what’s really cool is that since it’s such a fine powder, you can just mix it right into a smoothie, for an extra boost, sprinkle it on a salad…or even make it into cookies…but we’ll skip that recipe for now. :)

The Best Source You Can Find – My Friend Izumi’s Tea

I wanted to start sharing my love for matcha tea with you on the site mostly because I have a very close friend named Izumi from Florida where I used to live, who has her own matcha green tea powder import company. It’s all 100% organic green tea powder, that is imported RIGHT from her own family’s farm in Shizuoka, Japan. It’s where she grew up, and her family has been growing it for over 700 years…so they kinda know what they’re doing. :)

Matcha Cinnamon Bun Smoothie Recipe
If you don't have a high-speed blender yet, chop your bananas into small pieces before freezing so your blender will have an easier time....and then I highly recommend you get a Vitamix when you can swing it! :)
Recipe type: smoothie
Serves: 1-2 servings
  • 1½ cups almond milk
  • 4 medjool dates, pitted
  • 2 cups spinach, romaine or baby kale greens
  • ¼ cup rolled oats (raw)
  • 2 bananas, frozen
  • 1 teaspoon organic matcha green tea powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • ½ teaspoon maple extract (or 1 teaspoon maple syrup)
  1. Add the first four ingredients to your blender and blend on high to combine, in order to break down the greens enough first. They should be as smooth as possible to extract as many nutrients as possible.
  2. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend on high until fully combined and smooth. Enjoy!
